Difference/ Comparison between TIG and MIG Welding
TIG Welding
1. Permanent non-consumable tungsten electrode is used in this process.
2. Filler metal may or may not be used in TIG welding.
3. Penetration is not so much deeper as compared to MIG.
4. Both AC and DC power source can be used.
5. Metal thickness which can be welded is limited to about 6 mm.
6. Electrode feed not required in case of TIG welding.
7. Welding speed is slow.
8. TIG welding torch is water cooled.
9. Additional fixtures required to hold the work piece.
10. Requires skilled operator.
MIG Welding
1. Consumable metallic electrode is used in this process.
2. Filler metal in the form of wire is used in MIG welding.
3. Deeper penetration can be obtained as compared to TIG.
4. DC power source with reverse polarity is generally used.
5. Suitable for thickness more than 6 mm. Thickness can go upto 40 mm.
6. Electrode need to be fed at a constant speed from a wire reel.
7. Welding is faster
8. No cooling is necessary.
9. No fixturing required. process can be easily automated.
10. Less skilled operator can perform.
