Advantages of powder metallurgy process

Advantages of powder metallurgy process

(i) Wide variation of composites:
โ€“
Powder metallurgy process can be
employed for many types of the composite
such as metal matrix composite and ceramic matrix composite. Metals and ceramics
can be mixed together to improve the properties
of resultant composite materials. Immiscible components can be combined
together and solid solubility limits can be increased, which is not possible in
any other process.

(ii) High production rate:
โ€“
In powder metallurgy processes all
steps are unassuming and readily pre-set. Labor
requirements are low, while, maintain the product uniformly and productivity
are on the large scale.

(iii) Variation in properties:
โ€“
Variation in composite properties can be
achieved by using the powder metallurgy method, such as the magnetic and wear
properties can be designed to match the needs of a specific applications. The
porosity of the component can also be tailored as per the needs of the
specified requirements.

(iv) Elimination or
reduction of machining: โ€“
In powder metallurgy
process can provide the dimensional accuracy and surface finish of the products;
therefore, the machining process can be totally eliminated for many
applications.

(v) Production of
complex shapes: โ€“
In powder metallurgy
(P/M) processes complex shapes such as combination gears, cams, internal keys
and many others desired shapes could be manufactured. The process of powder
metallurgy can produce parts which cannot be prepared by using the machining or
casting process economically.

(vi) Reduction of scrap:
โ€“
Further, by using the powder metallurgy
processes, the material waste or scrap can be zero, compared to casting, machining, and press forming where the scrap
can exceed 50% of the starting raw material. The scrap reduction is
particularly important, where the costly
materials are used.
